I learned some amazing leadership lessons from a Carnival cruise ship Captain!
If you missed parts 1, 2, and 3 read them here.
One thing I love doing is explaining how people can leverage their top talent themes to be more successful: in sales, public speaking, as a manager, a leader, or even non-work-related things like parenting, health & fitness, or parenting!
Here are Captain Enzo’s top five: Positivity®, Includer®, Strategic®, Restorative™, and Learner®.
Gallup has talked about four things great leaders do (let me know if you want an article on this). They are to Build Trust, Show Compassion, Provide Stability, and Create Hope.
One way Positivity® can Build Trust is to “"Keep your positive remarks coming and allow others to trust, over time, that you're always going to have that upbeat emphasis - in your life and in theirs.” I definitely saw Captain Enzo do this by keeping things positive and light hearted.
For Includer®, one way to Show Compassion is to "reach out and invite others to join in.” This is more customer oriented, but I have seen and heard so many Carnival guests speak so highly of Captain Enzo because of the way he spends so much time with them and making each of them feel special.
Part of leading and managing is being a great coach. I saw Captain Enzo display this using his Strategic® when “discussing options candidly and thoroughly with those involved.” Him and his executive team do debriefs after operations and I watched him talk a junior officer through some decision making that not only revealed Captain Enzo’s remarkable decision making but how he was coaching and imparting this wisdom and advice to those he lead.
If you’re enjoying this breakdown, send me a quick note if you want me to continue with more ways I saw Captain Enzo lead with his top talent themes.
