I learned some amazing leadership lessons from a Carnival cruise ship Captain!
If you missed part 1 and part 2, read them here.
Today let’s rewind a little so I can explain how I was able to meet Captain Enzo and the leadership lesson I learned from it.
Rewind a few weeks ago when I was on the Carnival Firenze. I was walking into the Main Dining Restaurant (MDR) when one of the crew recognized me (from my cruising YouTube channel). He introduced himself as the Food and Beverage Director, Milind Sathe. Director Milind asked if I wanted to meet the Captain. After thinking about it for maybe 30 milliseconds, of course, I said YES!
Little did I know that this was another leadership lesson disguised as an incredible life opportunity.
One of the reasons I came up with my three levels of leadership is by studying leadership and management by so many amazing people. As I learned and applied those things to my own journey, I would constantly simplify and re-contextualize to help me learn.
If you’ve studied leadership for more than 5 minutes you’ve probably heard of John Maxwell. Among one of his many incredible lessons is the 21 irrefutable laws of leadership. So many of them apply here but let’s talk about Law #11—the law of the inner circle.
You see, Director Milind is part of Captain Enzo’s inner circle. Because Captain Enzo has surrounded himself with amazing leaders, and empowered them they are able to lift his ship (both literally and metaphorically) by operating in their giftings and strengths.
You can see Law #12—the law of empowerment at play also. If you remember from last week, Director Milind took charge and did things without needing direction or guidance. That happens because the leader at the top, Captain Enzo empowered him.
What really intrigued me was that I could see how well Captain Enzo lead by studying his followers. Director Milind.
But how did I end up at a once–in–a–lifetime breakfast interview with Captain Enzo? Let’s talk about that next week as we break down another leadership lesson, this time around how Captain Enzo leads with his Strengths.
