Of all the four domains, Influencing has potential to be the strongest in … well, influence with other people. This can be a good thing. Even a great thing. But just like a double edged sword, this goes two ways and can also hinder you and the people you lead.

Because one of the strong pulls with Influencing is toward other people, there are a few ways that can show up as hindering. If you have strong desire to get people to like you and win them over that can sometimes show up as being shallow or superficial. Many people with Influencing have found that they dislike for authority or authority figures. Some people find that their desire to do something significant or to be the best puts them in overdrive to where others see them as egotistical or overly-competitive.
Whatever the case, ask yourself the question is what you’re thinking and doing helping or hindering you and what you’re wanting to accomplish. As a leader or manager, that might extend to if what you’re thinking or doing is helping or hindering your relationship with others. That competitive push that drives you to succeed might be alienating your teammate or direct report who needs a personal relationship with you.
