One framework I love using is a simple question to ask yourself. Is your Strategic Thinking helping or hindering you?
HELPING:
Strategic Thinking can help you figure out the best solution, plan for the future, prevent mistakes by analyzing the past, learn and gather important information you need to know, or even come up with the next billion dollar idea.
If Strategic Thinking is helping you then keep doing it! In fact, figure out how to do MORE of it because this is where you will break through to new levels of success.
HINDERS:
For some (ok, most) people there is a dark side to Strategic Thinking also. Most of the time, what can hinder you is when you think TOO MUCH. If you get lost in thought or keep telling yourself that you don’t have enough information yet to make a decision. Or you need ALL the information to make a decision. Or it’s just your comfort area to think!
WHAT TO DO:
If Strategic Thinking is hindering you here is a framework I have found very helpful for the thinkers.
First of all, set aside time every day or week to think. Be intentional about this because it will fuel you. The more you practice and be intentional about this the better and faster you will get.
Second, give yourself a time frame you need to stick to. If you do daily thinking then limit yourself to maybe an hour a day. It can also be helpful to set an intention or goal for your thinking time. It might be to come up with an idea, do research, or make a decision. Come up with a time frame that matches your outcome. Don’t give yourself a 5 minute window when you’re buying a new home. And don’t give yourself a year to decide what to get for dinner.
The more you do this the faster you will get and the more precise you will be with your estimates. This is another reason to practice this daily or weekly. It will feel awkward at first but as you do this more and more you will find yourself getting into a groove.
Finally, if you have other dominant talent themes in other domains you can lean into those. Think of your talent themes like tools in your tool belt. Put down tool(s) that aren’t helpful and pick up another tool that is better suited to help you reach your outcome.
