These last few weeks we have talked about how great leaders learn how to lead themselves first to become the best version of themselves (phase 1) before learning how to lead individuals (phase 2). If you missed these, read them here.
There is so much more to phase 2 but I want to jump ahead to phase 3 quickly to show how it all comes together: learning how to lead other leaders and teams.
Phase 3 is where a lot of things really start to click and you get that leadership momentum or what John Maxwell calls “The Big Mo.” You start putting together the things you learned in phase 2 to apply in phase 3.
Here are two quick ways I saw this manifest with Captain Enzo. First, when I saw him lead another leader, his Food & Beverage Director, Milind.
If you remember Part 2, I talked about how there was an interaction with a guest who was lost and trying to find his friends and family. While I didn’t get to see the leadership interactions leading up to this moment, I saw the result which is phase 3.
Director Milind was on the phone leading his own team. Leading his own team to find out where this group of guests where and verifying that it was the correct group. Captain Enzo had raised up and lead another leader to the point that he didn’t even have to say a word and Director Milind was off and doing what he needed to do.
Leading other leaders is very similar to leading other individual contributors. Your goal is to get them to be the best version of themselves possible. With individual contributors you are helping them become better marketers, nurses, accountants, or sales people. With other leaders and managers you’re helping them become better leaders and managers. You’re coaching them, sharing what worked for you, and helping them learn how they are wired so they can find out what will work for them.
Read part 7 where I break down another interaction I saw with Captain Enzo leading his team.
